Our Company is currently seeking a self-motivated, hardworking Law Clerk to join our Toronto office.  This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is looking to gain valuable hands-on work experience in a dynamic, team based working environment.

Position:  Law Clerk

Location:  Toronto

Term: 6 month contract with potential for renewal.

Hours: Flexible schedule, approximately 25-30 hours per week. 3-4 days a week in the office. Potential to increase to full-time hours after 6 months.

Primary Objective:  To prepare legal documents, maintain records and files and conducts research to assist management and partners with legal cases.

Responsibilities: The responsibilities of this position include;

  • Prepare litigation procedures related to Construction Law. 
  • Research records, court files and other legal documents.
  • Draft legal correspondence and prepare legal documents.
  • Draft contracts and other legal documents.
  • Search for and study legal documents to investigate facts and law of cases, to determine causes of action and to prepare cases.
  • Prepare affidavits of documents and maintain document files and case correspondence.
  • Research and analyze law sources to prepare drafts of briefs or arguments for review, approval, and use by attorney.
  • Review documents relevant to court actions.
  • Receives and files documents and vital records; maintains all files as keeper of files and records.
  • Respond to questions regarding court documents from CEO, Partners and Lawyer.
  • Issues certified copies of court documents.
  • Ensures that necessary documents are included in all case files before submitting them to court.

Qualifications, Experience and Education:

  • Bachelors or college degree required, with Paralegal certification preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3-5 years of direct work experience in a legal assistant capacity.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in construction law.
  • Strong knowledge of construction law concepts, principles, and terminology.
  • Thorough understanding of statutes, court decisions, ordinances, resolutions, and legal documentation.
  • Good understanding of legal reference materials, procedures, and legal filing systems.
  • Ability to read, interpret and apply legal documentation, laws or legislation
  • Proficiency with document management software and office productivity applications.

  • Strong sense of ethics and the ability to handle sensitive or confidential information with tact and discretion; knowledge of data privacy laws.
  • Superior interpersonal skills to interact with employees, attorneys, clients, departments, and external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with document management software and office productivity applications.
  • Good research skills on the Internet and traditional sources of information.
  • Excellent writing skills, including proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation for complex documentation.
  • Superior time management skills, multitasking skills, and the ability to prioritize tasks with minimal supervision.
  • High level of sound and independent judgment, reasoning, and diplomacy.
  • Resourcefulness and flexibility.
  • Professional, responsive, and positive work attitude is critical
