The Energy Efficiency Excellence Awards presented by NB Power recognized UNB Fredericton’s Kinesiology Building with the Innovation Award. This is a celebration of excellence and leadership in energy efficiency in New Brunswick.
MCW Maricor were the mechanical and electrical design engineers on the project. Design and construction was fast-tracked in order to qualify for the Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund (SIF), a funding program created to accelerate infrastructure projects at universities and colleges across Canada that support research and innovation. The project’s SIF funding was announced on April 6, 2016 and substantial completion of the 60,000 ft2 building was reached on April 30, 2018.
Energy efficiency was the main design requirement of this project. The project is targeting LEED Gold certification, which would make the Kinesiology Building the 9th to achieve this sustainable design standard in New Brunswick. It’s also one of the first 5 buildings in North America to receive WELL Silver Certification – a new certification program for buildings achieving high standards in occupant health and well-being.
Innovation in the building’s design that helped it achieve its high standard in energy performance include:
